Where is the spare tire on my new Motorhome?

Where is the spare tire on my new Motorhome? Have you noticed that most of the large manufacturers that make motorhomes have now stopped providing a spare tire? It’s true. You were probably out there going down your checklist, getting ready for your big trip and realized that there was no spare tire on your motorhome. Well, that was by design.

Why are the manufacturers leaving out the spare?

Well, there are a couple of reasons why. For one, these manufacturers have noticed that a majority of their customers do not own the tools or have the know-how to change a spare on a large scale motorhome. The second reason is about safety. They don’t want their customers putting themselves at risk on the side of the road. It’s pretty cool that Jayco offers roadside assistance free for 1 year on all new motorhomes.

Well, if you absolutely need to, you can install an aftermarket bracket and put a spare on your motorhome, but we highly recommend to rethink this for a couple reasons.

  1. By installing a spare you are adding roughly 100-150 lbs. of weight to your motorhome and probably taking extra space that could be used for other things.
  2. Unless you are savvy with RV repair, have the tools and jacks that are secure; it is always a good idea to have a professional do the work. When you’re by the side of the road with your RV on small jacks and a big truck blows by, you could find yourself in a dangerous situation.
